Sakteng boy tops Class XII board examination
Dorji Phuntsho scored 89.5 percent to come first

Dorji Phuntsho was collecting firewood in Sakteng when his phone rang yesterday. He answered the call. On the call was a voice congratulating him for topping the Bhutan Higher Secondary Education Certificate (BHSEC) examination yesterday.
He didn’t believe because his friend, Thinley, had been calling him and teasing him for the last three days. Thinley had a reason, Dorji Phuntsho tried hard to top the Class X examinations, he couldn’t. He told his friend that he would try hard to top the Class XII board examination.
Yesterday, the call was not from Thinley. It was his Principal. “I was convinced and quickly checked my results,” said Dorji Phuntsho over the phone yesterday.
The student of Jigme Sherubling Central School in Khaling didn’t expect to top, but he said that he tried hard to pass the exams with good marks. Eldest among five siblings, Dorji Phuntsho attributed his success to his hard working teacher, support from parents and wishes from his friends.
Dorji Phuntsho aspires to become an architect. He said he is inspired by the different types of architecture that he saw on “modern gadgets” like phones and television. He had never been to Thimphu and did his primary schooling in Sakteng. His favourite subject is mathematics. He scored 97. He scored 98 percent in Physics.
Asked if he was celebrating, he said he was alone at home, as his parents were at Brangsa (with the cattle). “They were not surprised because they expected me to do well, he said.
In the commerce stream, Tshering Wangmo of Ugyen Academy topped the examination with 87 percent. She couldn’t be contacted for an interview. In the Arts category, Ugyen Phuntsho of Kekli Higher Secondary school topped the category with 84.50 percent.
Ugyen Phuntsho is a son of a guard at the Royal Society for Protection of Nature. “I had worked hard with a dedicated study routine because I am repeating the Class,” he said. He had been topping the Class during the internal exams. “I had been aiming to top the board exam, but didn’t expect to come first,” said Ugyen who avoided using social media like Facebook and WeChat to concentrate on his study.
In the Dzongkha category, all the three toppers were from Taktse HSS. Sangay Wangchuk came first with 83.4 percent followed by Samten Duba with 81 percent and Tashi Lhamo who scored 79.2 percent.
Meanwhile, the pass-percentage of 84.82 percent is lower than the 88.99 percent in 2015.
Science students, however, have performed well this year compared to students from other streams. Of the total 3,137 science students, 2,871 students have passed their examinations.
In the Commerce stream, 82.72 percent of the total 3,438 students made it through. In Arts, 81.23 percent of the 3,835 students that sat for the examination passed.
