RCSC to help prepare civil servants for a better life after superannuation

The Royal Civil Service Commission (RCSC) conducted a two days workshop on Retirement Planning Services from June 15-16.
46 civil servants in Thimphu who would be retiring after 10 years attended the workshop. It was held to prepare these civil servants for retirement, both psychologically and financially.
Further, RCSC held this workshop to prepare for sustainable and secure retirement, Advocacy and awareness program on retirement, to talk on emotional and psychological impact of superannuation and being prepared healthy wise and common ailments.
Retirement Planning is one of the activities under the Civil Service Well-being program, one of the five reforms currently being undertaken under this Commission.
The retirement planning is an initiative to help civil servants plan their years for a better future. It is aimed at preparing civil servants mentally and financially for a better life after superannuation.
Likewise, workshops will now be conducted for all the civil servants who have a year to five years and 10 years to superannuate.
According to the press release these workshops are being conducted and will be conducted because it has been observed that civil servants are often caught unaware and unprepared for life after retirement. “Many are ill prepared to deal with financial, psychological, and emotional challenges after the separation from the civil service,” it stated. “Unfortunately, it is also too late to take remedial action to solve financial challenges.”
RCSC Chairman, Dasho Karma Tshiteem, said that when we retire from office, we suffer from various problems like financial, psychological and social problems.
He added that the commission felt something should be done to make civil servants realise and think about retirement day, which is certain to come so, the workshop was conducted.
“This workshop helps them to prepare themselves financially because they still have 10 years to do corrective measures,” he said. “There was very little effort put in to look at the wellbeing of civil servants. The Commission instead has only looked at achieving national goals but not focused on creating an environment that is conducive to civil servants.”
This workshop also prepares in terms of health, taxation rules and policies, calculating retirement benefits, calculating pension, and financial planning.
Former finance secretary, Lam Dorji said that first thing that you will realises after retirement is about your own house because you lived in government quarters, behind your identity and don’t have your home address. “Plan for your house now and do it immediately before 10 years,” he recommended. “Consider emotional attachment, health and finance as important in life.”
Human Resources officer with the Commission’s Well Being Services Division, Tshering Choden, said the workshop is to preparing civil servants for life after retirement. She added that this workshop will help them to set their retirement goals or objectives.
