580 B.Ed graduates to compete for 279 seats

With the government not guaranteeing direct employment of teachers, at least half of the 580 B.Ed graduates would be looking for teaching career outside the government.
The civil service entry examination is scheduled for January 9. The government will take in only 279 teacher graduates. There are 580 of them vying for the job. Out of that 100 students are in the Dzongkha category and 480 students with Primary/ secondary category.
The civil service has announced 175 slots for B.Ed. Primary, B. Ed Secondary with English/History/Geography electives to teach Primary level. In Dzongkha category, there are 50 slots, seven slots for B.Ed. in Secondary with Math elective, 50 slots for B.Ed. Secondary with Biology/Chemistry/Physics electives to teach science in Lower Secondary level, and 12 slots for B.Ed. Secondary with IT elective.
Meanwhile, B.Ed graduate are preparing for the exam, which will be held this Monday. Choki Dorji a B.Ed. graduated from Paro college education was preparing for the examination. “Data interpretation and problem solving will be toughest for me because I took Dzongkha,” he said.
Some are taking tuition. “I took tuition, hoping for the best in future,” said Tshering Chophel. He said that there is a lack of material to prepare for the appropriate subjects. “I am paying Nu100 per day for the preparation to avoid stress during exam,” he said.
Bhutan Today talked to about 10 B.Ed students who are sitting for the exam. They all said that there is confusion with the past question papers. For instance, Dzongkha B.Ed Graduate from Paro college of education is trained for Dzongkha subjects, where as they are not trained with math and others.
Some of them suggested that when they are in the teaching field, they have to teach the subject which they are related or trained with. Chimmi, who graduated from Samtse College said, “There is no option for me but I have to write my exam without Dzongkha knowledge,” she said.
